The City of Charlotte

Expanding to cover most of Mecklenburg county, the city of Charlotte encompasses many different neighborhoods and areas.

Besides Charlotte, the additional towns of Matthews, Pineville, Huntersville, Cornellius, and Mint Hill make-up the Mecklenburg school district and unify the county and city as an integral part of the larger Charlotte metropolitan area.

While one school district encompasses all the cities in Mecklenburg county there are 10 learning communities within the school district. Each learning community can set different goals for their community, use different PTA organizations, and develop learning cohorts so that children will be able to go to school with their peers from K-12 if they stay in the same community.

In addition to the learning areas, Charlotte has many distinct areas that a non-local quickly learns have their own culture, resources, and networking connections. When you are looking at property in Charlotte, the neighborhood is an important part of deciding where you want to live. Neighborhoods like Ballantyne, Piper Glenn Estates, NODA, the university district, and, of course, Uptown. For those moving into Charlotte, you will quickly discover that the downtown area is actually up, and you go uptown, not down.

Charlotte is a great place to live, with lots to love about the city, including:

  • Unique communities within the Charlotte Metro Area give you options and choice.

  • A high-speed rail connects Pineville to Uptown.

  • Charlotte’s Interstate system makes for quick travel into and around the city.

  • Nicknames include the Queen City (After Queen Charlotte, the city’s namesake) and the Hornet’s Nest (after a remark made by Lord Cornwallis in the American Revolution).

  • Like Sports? Take your pick in Charlotte, whether you like Professional sports (NFL’s Panthers and NBA’s Hornets), NASCAR (Charlotte Motor speedway and the Nascar Hall of Fame are both in the metropolitan area), or College sports, Charlotte has many options.

  • Known as a financial center, Charlotte has expanded into distribution, wholesale trades, transportation, and defense industries.

  • Charlotte Douglass International Airport is one of the 10 busiest airports in the United States.

  • Family activities include the United States National Whitewater Center, Discovery Place, and the Historic Rosedale Plantation.
